JFS of Central NJ to honor local leaders

LOCAL LEADERS will be honored by Jewish Family Service of Central NJ at a fund-raising dinner-dance on Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston. 

Dr. Lynne B Harrison, president of Harrison Research Laboratories, will receive the Lilly K. Gottlieb Award. Among her many leadership roles, she served as vice chair of the Hillel International board of directors as well as a member of the Hillel International board of governors. She founded Harrison LAPID for the professional development of young Hillel professionals.

She also established the Dr. Lynne B Harrison STEM Center at Golda Och Academy, West Orange, and the Dr. Lynn B Harrison Science Center at NJ “Y” Camps.

Rabbi Chaim Marcus of Congregation Israel, Springfield, will receive the JFS Rabbinic Leadership Award. He teaches at Bruriah High School for Girls and is the mashgiach ruchani (spiritual guide) at Rav Teitz Mesivta Academy, both part of the Jewish Educational Center in Elizabeth, a partner agency of JFS.

Carol Billet-Fessler, who has been JFS’s associate director for the past 18 years, will be honored for 31 years of service to the agency. 

JFS past president David Brooks of Springfield will receive the Ruth Bilenker Award for Outstanding Service. He and his family volunteer regularly at the agency’s food pantry and support all its community efforts. 

Steve Karp, executive director of the JEC, will receive the JFS Agency Community Service Award. 

Fred Kessler, JFS vice president, will receive the Miriam S. Karch Award. 

Clara Fernandez, constituent relations director for New Jersey’s 20th legislative district, will also be honored. She assists JFS clients with accessing county programs and has served on numerous JFS committees. 

The event will feature the Shir Soul a cappella group.

Couvert is $190. A cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7.
