Jerome Schaeffer

Jerome (Jerry) Schaeffer, 97, of Topeka, Kansas, died April 27, 2017. Born and raised in Newark, he lived in Livingston for much of his family life, followed by almost 30 years in Hollywood and Hallandale, Fla., before moving to Topeka several years ago. 

Mr. Schaeffer had a varied career, which included teaching industrial arts and serving as owner of The Hardware Center in Livingston. In addition, he was a jeweler and gemologist, carrying on a family tradition. 

He graduated from South Side High School in Newark and attended New York University, earning his degree from Newark State Teacher’s College. 

He was very involved in the formation and maintenance of the religious school at Temple Emanu-El in Livingston.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Rosalind; three sons, Ian David (Bobbi) of Topeka, Peter (Liz) of Essex Fells, and Kevin (Pat) of Roseland; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held on May 2 in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
