James Jay Lazarus, 75, of South Orange died Feb. 2, 2013. He was born in Newark and raised in South Orange.

Mr. Lazarus was chairman and CEO of L&R Manufacturing, an 80-year-old manufacturer of ultrasonic cleaning equipment company started by his grandfather. He began his career with his father and continued with his son Robert.

He attended Columbia High School, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia.

He was an avid lover of music and theatre, which began in high school, and continued in college with his band, The Savoy Six.

He was involved with the USO, the Jewelry Industry Distributor Association, the 24 Karat Club of New York, the Young Presidents Organization, and the World Presidents Organization. He devoted much of his recent time to South Orange Performing Arts Center and EIES of New Jersey, where he was chairman of the board.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Sklaw Lazarus — his high school “sweetheart” — and his children, Robert (Wendy) and Wendy J. Lazarus (David Glotzer), all of South Orange; his sister, Elaine Lieb and Susan Shapiro; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 5 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to EIES of New Jersey, South Orange.
