Irving Metzger

Irving Metzger, 89, of Monroe Township died Jan. 23, 2013. Born in Union City, he lived in Cranford before moving to Monroe many years ago.

Mr. Metzger was employed in the advertising field until his semi-retirement, when he worked for Educational Testing Service in Princeton.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising from New York University.

An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he served as a first lieutenant and was a B-17 pilot. His plane was downed over Germany and he became a POW, subsequently receiving a Purple Heart for injuries sustained.

He was a member of Temple Beth El of Cranford, where he served as a board member and an officer of the men’s club.

Predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Ellis), he is survived by his daughter, Rita (Bernie) Schwartz of Morganville; his son, Martin (Rosi) of Cranford; a brother, Murray of Florida; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 24 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Phyllis and Irving Metzger Fund at Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim, 338 Walnut Ave., Cranford, NJ 07016.
