Irene J. Buchner

Irene J. Buchner (Jacoby), 84, of Westfield died on Jan. 16, 2011. Born in Berlin, she also lived in Washington, DC; Northfield, Minn.; Bloomington, Ind.; Pittsburgh; and Cranford before settling in Westfield in 1958.

Mrs. Buchner was a middle school teacher in Mountainside for 18 years. She earned a BA degree in international relations from Carleton College, Northfield, and a master’s of education from Rutgers University, where she also did additional post-graduate work.

She was a past president of the Westfield League of Women Voters, a life member of Westfield Hadassah, and a member of ORT in Boca Raton. She was a board member of Temple Emanu-El, Westfield, and of the Jewish Federation of Central Jersey and a founder of the federation’s Hebrew Free Loan Society.

Mrs. Buchner was predeceased by her husband, Bernard. She is survived by her children, Dr. Deborah of South Orange and Carl Buchner of Frankfurt, Germany; and her grandchildren, Jonathan and Rebecca.

Services were held Jan. 20 at Temple Emanu-El with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
