Inconsistency is acceptable
Regarding Jared Silverman’s “What makes an issue a Jewish issue?” (June 29), why is it a problem that there is no unifying Jewish position on an issue? The Torah itself is an anthology which contains numerous instances of conflicting perspectives. And since the canon was set, the Jewish civilization has evolved for well over two millennia in diverse communities around the globe. If we were anything but complex and inconsistent, it would be a miracle. And not in a good way. Here’s to Hillel and Shammai, too.
