Inconsequential silence

I found the op-ed “How Obama can still advance Mideast peace” (Oct. 20) to be puzzling, since it not only identifies steps Israel should take to reach a settlement but it also includes steps the Palestinian leadership should take to reach this goal.

What is perplexing is that the existing opinions in circulation are silent as to what is expected of the Palestinian leadership in reaching a settlement. Yet this silence is inconsequential as the current Palestinian leadership may not be able to meet any of their commitments in a settlement. Shortly after Israel evacuated from and returned control of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority, it was expelled from Gaza by Hamas.
