Hyla Garlen

Hyla Brodkin Garlen, 90, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Summit, died May 5, 2017. She was born in Irvington.

Dr. Garlen worked as a school psychologist for close to 20 years. 

She earned a BA from Cornell University, an MA from Columbia University, and a PhD from Walden University. She volunteered for numerous organizations, including CASA and The Visual Arts Center of NJ.

Predeceased by her husband of 52 years, David, she is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Dominick) Leone of Clearwater and Elizabeth (Frank J.) Arrison of Doylestown, Pa.; her son, Daniel (Marilyn) of Philadelphia; a brother, Roger Brodkin; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life was held May 9 in Clearwater; a memorial service will be held in Summit on June 4 (visit hyla.garlen.net).
