Hortense Shider

Hortense Shider (Greenwald), 103, died Jan. 22, 2013. Born in Newark, she resided in Hillside before settling in Springfield 12 years ago.

Mrs. Shider was a dance instructor and owner of the Hortense Greenwald School of Dance in Newark and Hillside for 45 years.

She graduated from Central High School, Newark.

She had been the oldest congregant of Temple Sha’arey Shalom in Springfield.

Predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Leon, in 1973, she is survived by two daughters, Harriet (Roger) Keehn of Springfield and Helen (Bruce) Hermann of Endwell, NY; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 24 at Temple Sha’arey Shalom with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.; Sha’arey Shalom; or Children’s Specialized Hospital, Mountainside.
