Herbert Kanter
Herbert Kanter, 88, of Roswell, Georgia, died June 16, 2013. Born in Brooklyn, he had also lived in the Bronx, North Plainfield, and Berkeley Heights.
From 1963 until 2010, Mr. Kanter officiated at New Jersey swim meets, and was head of the waterfront at Camp Harmony and head counselor at Camp Riverbend for over 45 years. He coached football, basketball, and swimming, and taught at South Orange Junior High School until his retirement.
Mr. Kanter earned a degree in physical education from Springfield College, Massachusetts, and a master’s degree from Columbia University.
He was a World War II veteran of the China-Burma-India theater.
Active at Temple Sinai in Summit and Temple Kehillat Chaim in Roswell, where his son-in-law is the founding rabbi, he sponsored a service dog, Chancer, a golden retriever.
Predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Sarah (Gig) Bernstein, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Jed and Penny Kanter of Gillette, and Donnie and Rabbi Harvey Winokur of Roswell; his grandchildren; and his sister, Natalie Holzman.
Arrangements were by SouthCare Cremation and Funeral Society in Alpharetta, Georgia.
