Herbert Hein
Dr. Herbert F. Hein, 74, of Short Hills died July 26, 2013. Born in Brooklyn, he was raised in Long Island and later moved to Elizabeth.
Dr. Hein built a thriving ophthalmology practice in Newark. He served as the president of the medical staff at Saint James Hospital in Newark for two years. He received various awards and accolades for his passionate practice of medicine throughout the state.
He received a bachelor of arts in history from the University of Vermont and his MD from the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Newark Beth Israel Hospital and his residency in ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.
In 1965, he entered the U.S. Navy and then served a year in Vietnam with the Marine Corps in 1966.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan Flax Hein; his daughter, Stacey (David) Gross of Elizabeth; his son, Steven (Kimberly) of Short Hills; a brother, Peter of Dix Hills, NY; and three grandchildren.
Services were held July 28 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
