Henry Bernhardt

Henry “Hank” Lowell Bernhardt, 87, of Mount Arlington died Oct. 18, 2018. He was born in Jersey City and later lived in Fair Lawn before moving to Mount Arlington 11 years ago.

Mr. Bernhardt began his career as a teacher in public schools and soon began work as an elementary school principal in New Jersey school districts, finishing his career as principal for 14 years at John A. Forest School in Fair Lawn.

He studied education at Jersey City State College and completed his graduate work at Teachers College, Columbia University.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea.

He was a member of Temple Emanuel of Paterson, where he served on its board for a number of years, and a member of the Juvenile Conference Committee of Fair Lawn. He was an active member of Lake Hopatcong Jewish Community Center.

Predeceased by his wife, Ruth, in March 2018, he is survived by his son, Jeffrey; his daughter, Alyssa (Billy); and four grandchildren.

Services with military honors were held on Oct. 21 with arrangements by Kehila Chapels, Brooklyn.
