Harrison Fertig
Harrison Fertig, 88, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died Sept. 2, 2012. Born and raised in Plainfield, he moved to Boynton Beach in 2004.
Dr. Fertig was a cardiologist in South Plainfield for 45 years before retiring 18 years ago. He was the founder of Central Jersey Cardiology Group. Under his direction, Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center was the first Coronary Care Unit established in New Jersey, simultaneously with Hackensack. He also had a seminal role in the training of the earliest Coronary Care Unit nurses in the state as well as the training of cardiology fellows. He was honored in 1991 for the opening of the new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at MRMC. He was a full clinical professor at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
He received his college and medical degrees from the University of Virginia. He completed his internship in medicine, his residency, and fellowship in cardiology at New York University Bellevue Medical Center.
Predeceased by his first wife, Geraldine Mutnick Fertig, in 2000 after 53 years of marriage, he is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Andrew of Clinton, Maine, and Brian of Branchburg; his daughter, Cindy Koplowitz of Warren; and three grandchildren.
Services were held Sept. 5 with arrangement by Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Children’s Lightning Wheels, Children’s Specialized Hospital, 150 New Providence Rd., Mountainside, NJ 07092.
