Harris Effross
Harris Effross, 84, of Highland Park died March 15, 2014. Born in Brooklyn, he was a longtime resident of Highland Park.
For 44 years Dr. Effross was a professor of political science at Rutgers University in the Bureau of Government Research (later known as the Center for Government Services). He authored numerous articles, six entries in the Encyclopedia of New Jersey, and two books on the history of New Jersey county government and the evolution of the office of the New Jersey sheriff.
He received a LittB degree from Rutgers University in journalism, a master’s degree from New York University in political science, and a PhD from Rutgers in political science.
He was a member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey’s Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics, the New Jersey Historical Commission (from which he received an Award of Recognition for Outstanding Service), the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission, and the Highland Park Historical Commission. He received a Career Merit Award from the New Jersey Association of Counties.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susi, and two sons, Walter and David.
Services were held March 17 with arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick.
