Hanns Loewenbach
Hanns “Opa” H. Loewenbach of Virginia Beach, Va., died Jan. 30, 2012. A Holocaust survivor, he was born in Germany and moved to the United States after the war. In 1988, he moved to Virginia.
Mr. Loewenbach worked for Custom Shop Shirts for over 30 years before he retired.
He was an active member at the Jewish Center of Sussex County in Newton, where he often served as the cantor on the High Holy Days. After moving to Virginia, he became a congregate of Beth El Temple, Norfolk, for 23 years.
He spoke about his Shoa experiences at local schools and military bases, telling his story up until his last days of life.
Predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Loewenbach, in 1958, and second wife, Jutta Loewenbach, in 2006, he is survived by two daughters, Miriam Becker and Gail Sobel; his son, Ben; and six grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 1 with arrangements by Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach.
