Groups vs. individuals
I was surprised by the furor over the Clinton-Mezvinsky wedding (“Chelsea, Marc, and the ‘new world’ of religion,” Aug. 5).
The great books, music, and art teach us that when a couple wishing to marry for love is thwarted or discouraged “for the needs of the group,” unhappiness and sometimes tragedy results. The group is always concerned with what it thinks is best for it, but not for the individual. One result of this is the “honor murders” carried out by some groups.
If we continue to read the books, hear the music, and look at the art without learning their message, we do so at our own peril.
