Gerald Safier

Gerald R. Safier, 85, of Boca Raton, Fla., died Oct. 9, 2017. Born in Newark, he was a longtime resident of Hollywood, Fla., moving to Boca Raton a year ago.

In 1971, Dr. Safier, an optometrist, opened his family medical practice in Davie, Fla., serving his patients for over 45 years.

A 1950 graduate of Weequahic High School (1950), he earned his medical degree at College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa in 1969. 

He served in the Air Force in Okinawa. 

He was an avid golfer and amateur chef. 

Predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Ethel Pearlman Safier, in 2008, he is survived by two daughters, Renée Safier Harris (Marc) of Parkland, Fla., and Gayle Safier of Davie; a brother, Lester Safier of Torrance, Calif.; four grandchildren; and his companion, Barbara Klein Weisman, his former high school girlfriend. 

Services were held Oct. 11 with arrangements by Star of David Memorial Gardens, N. Lauderdale, Fla. Memorial contributions may be made to HANDY, LLC, 501 NE 8th St., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33304; or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
