Gerald (“Jerry”) Katz, 98, of Hollywood, Fla., died Feb. 8, 2014. He was born in Newark and grew up in its Weequahic neighborhood. He had a home in Hollywood since 1975.
Mr. Katz had a long career in the wholesale jewelry business, working for 40 years with his son, Jay.
He worked through odd jobs to pay for college and completed his pre-med studies at the University of Michigan, graduating with honors. He completed additional science classes at New York, Rutgers, and Columbia universities, and also taught science for a time.
Predeceased by a grandson, Adam Katz, he is survived by his wife of almost 72 years, Sandra Oksenhorn Katz; his son; two daughters, Jane Lessin and Jill Bernstein; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 12 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
