George Lewis

George Lewis, 91, of Cranford died July 2, 2014. Born in Jersey City, he lived in Cranford since 1954. 

Mr. Lewis worked in wholesale and retail areas of major appliances and television and was appointed president of Leeds-Fox, a wholesale division of Vornado dealing with the distribution of Panasonic television and appliances.

He received his college education on the G.I. Bill and graduated from John Marshall Law School, cum laude, with an LLB degree.

In World War II, he served in the 36th Division of the U.S. Fifth Army fighting in southern Italy at the battle of the Rapido River near Monte Cassino. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received by shrapnel, and received the Oak Leaf Cluster for second wounds.

He was a member of Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim in Cranford since 1954.

He is survived by his wife, Mille (Gelzer); two daughters, Amy Lewis (Paul) of South Orange and Susan Dua of Edison; his son, Robert (Janis Rodman) of Livingston; and four grandchildren.

Services were held July 6 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
