Franklin A. Chenitz
Franklin A. Chenitz, 88, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died Nov. 20, 2010. He formerly lived in Newark and Westfield before locating to Boynton Beach 20 years ago.
Mr. Chenitz was a playground director and physical education teacher. He played and coached basketball at the YMHA in Newark, and taught swimming for many years in Newark and at Sun Valley Swim Club in Chatham.
A star basketball player, he was a graduate of Weequahic High School in Newark’s class of January 1940 and Panzer College, where he was inducted into its hall of fame in 1977. He also graduated from Seton Hall University and the National Aquatic School, and played basketball professionally in the Eastern League.
He served as a medical technician in the Pacific during World War II. Upon his return, he was presented with Newark’s key to the city.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet; three daughters, Ilene McVea, Nancy Bernstein, and Frani DeJaco; his son, Richard; and nine grandchildren.
Services were held Nov. 24 with arrangements by Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, Boynton Beach.
