Frances Kaplan

Frances “Fran” R. Kaplan (Rich), 96, of Maplewood died June 3, 2016. Born in Newark, she lived most of her life in Springfield before moving to Maplewood three years ago. 

Mrs. Kaplan was a teacher and guidance counselor at West Side High School in Newark for over 51 years. She was a director of pupil personnel services and of administration and supervision.

She received her bachelor’s degree from New York University’s School of Commerce and her master’s degree from NYU’s School of Education. 

She chaired and was an adviser to many educational boards. 

She was involved with the Rutgers University Foundation and was a contributor and benefactor to the university along with her husband. 

Predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 1999, she is survived by a sister, Belle Podems of Livingston; eight nieces and nephews, Marc Podems, Robert Podems, Ruth Wuenschel, Sally Spindel, Richard Schanerman, Frances Foster, Saundra Lautenberg, and Helen Schorr; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were held June 7 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
