Evelyn Herman
Evelyn Herman (Israel), 86, of Riverside, Calif., died Jan. 14, 2013. She was born in the Bronx, lived in Hazelton, Pa., as a young child, and spent was raised in Elizabeth. She lived in Westfield before moving to California in 1992. She also had spent summers in Deal and Beach Haven.
Mrs. Herman taught nursery school at the YMHA on Green Lane in Elizabeth for many years before retiring.
She graduated from Battin High School, Elizabeth, and attended Skidmore College and the University of Wisconsin before graduating from Rutgers University in 1947.
Active in the Ruth Estrin Goldberg Memorial as a young mother, she played golf as a member of Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains, where she and her husband were members prior to their move to the West Coast.
She was a member of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield. In California she founded the Yiddish Club and was a member of the Brandeis Club in the Sun Lakes community where they lived.
Predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Charles, she is survived by four daughters, Shelly (Howard) Kaplan of Monroe, Debbie Goldner of Las Vegas, Penny (Nicholas) Herman of San Francisco, and Carol of Riverside; and five grandchildren.
Private services were held.
