Erich Max Wertheim

Erich Max Wertheim, 82, of Monroe Township died Aug. 30, 2011. Born in Kirchhain, Germany, he and his family escaped to the United States in 1938, six weeks prior to the outbreak of Kristallnacht, settling in Hoboken. He also lived in Hillside and Springfield.

Mr. Wertheim, along with his brother, Fred, established E & F Kosher Meat and Poultry Market in 1955 in Hoboken, which then moved to North Bergen until its closing in 1989.

He attended Rutgers University.

A Korean War veteran, he served from 1951 until 1953.

He was a member of Congregation Beit Shalom in Monroe.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Temi (Hilf); three daughters, Sheryl Erman of Westfield, Karen Eisenberger of Potomac, Md., and Debbie Cohen of Clark; a brother, Leo of North Bergen and Naples, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 2 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Cranford.
