Emil Kalfus

Emil Kalfus, 89, of Colonia died Oct. 31, 2013. Born in Poland, he was a Holocaust survivor who had lived in Newark and Hillside before moving in 1972 to Colonia.

Mr. Kalfus owned and operated a floor and tile business.

Mr. Kalfus, known as the “Candy Man” for giving candy to anyone he met, shared his war experiences with many students at Edison and Woodbridge schools and elsewhere, and was interviewed on many occasions.

Predeceased by his wife, Esther, in 2000, he is survived by his son, Richard, and a brother, Bernard.

Services were held Nov. 1 with arrangements by Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Edison. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Neve Shalom, Metuchen.
