Elya Derbaremdiker

Elya Derbaremdiker of Jersey City died Sept. 7, 2012. Born in the Ukraine, he immigrated to the United States in 1994, first settling in Delaware and then relocating to Jersey City in 2004.

Mr. Derbaremdiker was a journalist who worked for numerous Russian-Jewish and Anglo-Jewish newspapers and magazines, including the Yiddish language edition of The Daily Forward.

He was a graduate of the Lenin University Pedagogical Institute in Moscow where he majored in Yiddish.

He served in World War II in the Russian Army Tank Corps and received numerous decorations for his valor.

He is survived by his brother, Matvey Derbaremdiker.

Services were held Sept. 10 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield.
