Ellen Bamberger De Franco
Ellen Bamberger De Franco, 92, of Oakland, Calif., died Sept. 26, 2010. She grew up in West Orange and lived in Los Angeles from 1957-2005.
Ms. De Franco was the daughter of Edgar Sutro Bamberger and Daisy Fox and great-niece of Louis Bamberger, owner of L. Bamberger & Co. department store in Newark.
A graduate of Wheaton College, she taught parent education and family life education for 25 years for Los Angeles city schools. She also taught preschool and parent education for 16 years at UCLA Extension and volunteered at Durant Library in Los Angeles running discussion groups for recent immigrants. She was the author of 10 books on the subject of family life education, including TV: On/Off: Better Use of Family Television, and Parents, Help Your Child to Read!
She also wrote several accounts of her memories of Newark’s Bamberger family that are included in the Jewish Historical Society of MetroWest’s archives.
She is survived by three children, Cathy Knowles of Manchester, England, Jean Gelbart of Beersheva, Israel, and John Schindel of Oakland; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
