Elana Schipper
Elana Schipper (Ethel Golden), 84, of Whippany died Dec. 31, 2012. She was born in Newark and lived in Maplewood and Madison until 1993.
Mrs. Schipper was the youngest graduate at the time (January 1945) of Weequahic High School, Newark.

She changed her name at age 50 when she graduated from Kean College and began a career in special education.
After her grandson Daniel was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 15, she took on what the New Jersey Jewish News in 2006 called a “gospel of laughter” as a ‘mitzvah’ clown visiting senior centers and children’s hospitals.
Predeceased by her husband, Norman, in 1993, she is survived by two sons, Joel of California and Larry of Mendham; her daughter, Roberta of Whippany; five grandchildren; and her longtime companion, Ben Lorber.
Services were held Jan. 3 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah and Youth Aliyah.
