Dorothy Gabriner

Dorothy Katz Gabriner (Harrison), 95, of West Orange died April 15, 2014. Born and raised in Paterson, she resided in Hillside before moving to Montclair over 35 years ago. 

Mrs. Gabriner, the first female licensed life insurance agent in the State of New Jersey, worked for Guardian Life for many years. 

She was a civil and women’s rights advocate and marcher, an advocate in Trenton for better nursing home care, a volunteer at Daughters of Miriam nursing home, and an inspirational speaker for those with severe physical disabilities. She also was a life member of Hadassah. 

Predeceased by her husbands, Herbert Katz in 1960 and Hymon Gabriner in 1977, she is survived by her son, Harry (Lorri), and two grandchildren. 

Services were held April 18 with arrangements by Louis Suburban Chapel, Fair Lawn. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care, West Orange.
