Doris Markowitz

Doris Spielberg Markowitz, 95, of West Orange died Aug. 31, 2017. She lived in Roselle after her marriage in 1944.

Mrs. Markowitz worked for the Elizabeth Board of Education for many years as a school secretary at Winfield Scott School No. 2, under principals Bernice Davis and Al Hawkins. 

She graduated from South Side High School in Newark and went on to receive certificates for secretarial courses she completed. 

She was an active community member, volunteering at Elizabeth General Hospital. She was the founder of the Ladies Auxiliary of Jewish Women and was active in veteran affairs. She was a longtime member of Elmora Hebrew Center. 

Predeceased by her husband, Hyman, and a grandson, Lee Hudson Markowitz, she is survived by two sons, Larry (Randi Miller) of Springfield and Steven (Candy) of Elizabeth; a brother, Morris Spielberg of Verona; a sister, Mildred Siderman of Lakewood; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. 

Services were held Sept. 1 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
