Donald Hersh
Donald Hersh, 86, of Bernardsville died March 20, 2014. He was born in Newark and lived in Maplewood for many years before moving to Bernardsville in 1985.
Dr. Hersh practiced optometry in Maplewood for nearly 50 years, before moving to direct the contact lens divisions of Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School and the Cornea and Laser Eye Institute in Teaneck, where he worked with his son Peter. He specialized in the contact lens management of corneal diseases, with a particular interest in keratoconus. He was also the developer of the Hersh Palpebral Traction lens, a specialized contact lens.
He graduated from Weequahic High School, Newark, and Columbia University in 1951. He attended the Columbia School of Optometry.
Predeceased by his wife, Carol, in 1994, and a son, Jimmy (Karen), in 2007, he is survived by his son Peter (Beth); a sister, Elaine Krusch; and five grandchildren.
Services were held March 21 with arrangements by Bailey Funeral Home, Mendham. Memorial contributions may be made to National Keratoconus Foundation
