Defining moment
The tragic shooting that took place in Newtown, Conn., again brings to the forefront the issue of gun control. This time, however, the political debate transcends party lines and goes straight to the heart of the matter — the safety of our precious children.
As president of National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section, I want to express our profound sadness for this senseless massacre and that our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the victims. NCJW, which has long supported strong gun control, calls on federal and state leaders to enact tougher laws to control the sale and possession of guns.
How many more tragedies will it take to spur lawmakers to take decisive and effective action? The photographs of a devastated community and the faces of 20 beautiful fallen angels will forever be etched in my mind. The situation hit home as I accompanied my youngest grandchild to school on Monday. As I left him at his kindergarten, I couldn’t help but look with a new perspective. If it could happen in the sleepy community of Newtown, why not here?
The deep love and devotion of family is the great equalizer. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, we can all agree the safety and security of our loved ones is our first priority. We must heed this wake-up call and come together to make this a defining moment for the issue of gun control.
