David Edward Hershkowitz

David E. Hershkowitz, 98, died July 8, 2017. Born in the Bronx, he lived in Newark, Maplewood, and Elizabeth before retiring to Delray Beach, Fla., in 1981. When he returned to New Jersey he lived in Tinton Falls, Watchung, and Livingston.

Mr. Hershkowitz was employed as a cake salesman for more than 40 years. He worked at Fischer Baking Company and later at Mrs. Mac’s Bakery, both located in Newark. He belonged to the Teamsters Union.

He graduated from James Monroe High School in 1938. 

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., during World War II.

Mr. Hershkowitz was a member of Temple Israel of Irvington and Congregation B’nai Ahavath Shalom in Union. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. 

Mr. Hershkowitz excelled at sports. He was a loyal Brooklyn Dodgers fan whose love for baseball continued with the Mets and Marlins.

Predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Elaine (nee Tessler), he is survived by his two children, Iris (Ronald) Schaffer of Springfield and Michael Harris (Gail) of Green Brook; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held July 11 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin.
