David Carver

Dr. David Carver, 85, of Princeton died June 20, 2015. He was born in Boston. 

Dr. Carver worked with two Nobel laureates whose research on the growth of viruses in tissue cultures had led to Dr. Jonas Salk’s discovery of a polio vaccine. He then began his teaching career as director of the infectious diseases division in the Department of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He then moved to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, serving as director of the division of infectious diseases in the Department of Pediatrics, where he had established an international reputation as a pediatric virologist. 

In 1976 he was recruited from Johns Hopkins to be Physician-in-Chief at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. He recruited many outstanding pediatric subspecialists, reflecting the rapid advances in medical knowledge and an increasing ability to successfully treat complex pediatric illnesses. He served in this role until returning to the United States as chairman at Rutgers Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. He spent 12 years as chair before changing roles to be appointed associate dean for faculty at Rutgers/Robert Wood Johnson. 

He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1955. After completing a medical internship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, he completed a fellowship at Western Reserve University in Cleveland while on active duty with the U.S. Public Health Service. He completed his residency and chief residency in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Predeceased by his wife, Patricia, and a daughter, Rebecca, he is survived by two children, Randy and Lesley; and three grandchildren. 

Arrangements were handled by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing. A celebration of his life is planned for later this year. Memorial contributions may be made to Rebecca Carver Memorial Education Fund, 7473 Center St., Mentor, OH 44060.
