“Shalom, my homeys.” That simple greeting garnered the first of many rounds of hearty applause and laughter for veteran sports broadcaster Bob Costas, the featured speaker at The Main Event, the major fund-raising event for United Jewish Appeal of MetroWest NJ.

Speaking to an audience of 450 sports fans and donors, Costas shared stories about the players and personalities (including an excellent impersonation of the late Howard Cosell) he met during a career that has garnered him 12 Emmy Awards.

The March 29 event was held at Mayfair Farms in West Orange. It raised more than $110,000 in new and increased gifts, for a total raised from attendees of $1.9 million for the campaign year. This total included $17,000 from guests, who paid an additional $1,000 for an autographed baseball signed by Costas.

Prior to Costas’ remarks, Daniel Malinksy and his father, Joseph, spoke about the assistance and support they received as clients of the WAE Center of the Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled of MetroWest.
