Claire Koehler Hecht
Claire Koehler Hecht, 100, of Basking Ridge died Sept. 29, 2011. Born in Newark, her family had a summer home in Oceanport, where she moved to in 1957 before relocating to Basking Ridge in 1997. She celebrated her centennial birthday on June 5.
Mrs. Hecht attended Ridge Street Elementary and Barringer High School in Newark.
She was a fourth-generation member of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, formerly of Newark, and a member of Temple Beth Miriam of Elberon.
She was a volunteer with the Red Cross during World War II, led Girl Scout Troop 11 at B’nai Jeshurun for 15 years, was president of the Infants Welfare League, and volunteered at the Fuld Neighborhood House, all in Newark.
In Monmouth County, she was active in the Oceanport Historical Society and the sisterhood of Temple Beth Miriam. For many winters, Claire traveled in a RV throughout the United States with her sister-in-law, Rita Hecht.
Predeceased by her husband, Arthur, in 1979, she is survived by two daughters, Barbara Davis of Boca Raton, Fla., and Kathryn Hecht of San Francisco; and three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sept. 30 with arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean.
