Celebrating Purim in the community

Your guide to Purim celebrations in New Jersey for the week leading up to and on the holiday!

Purim begins this year on Wednesday night, March 20, and continues on Thursday, March 21. The following synagogues and organizations will hold celebrations open to the community during the week leading up to and including the holiday:

Congregation Agudath Israel, Caldwell — A Purim carnival will be held Sunday, March 17, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., featuring inflatables and games for children ages 2-12 as well as lunch items and snacks. Register online at agudath.org/events for $20, $25 at the door. Call 973-226-3600.

Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston — A Purim carnival featuring games, hamantaschen baking, and inflatables will be held Sunday, March 17, 10 a.m.-noon (a preview is available for children 5 and under at 9:30).

Congregation B’nai Israel, Millburn — Joanie Leeds and the NightLights will perform at a Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 17, with a Purim spiel and costume parade at 9:30 a.m., carnival at 10, concert at 11, and lunch at noon featuring pizza, ice cream, and hamantaschen for sale.

Tickets for children 12 and under are $10 for both the carnival and the concert, free for ages 13+ and adults. Call 973-379-3811.


Bnai Keshet, Montclair — Purim Carnival 2019 will be held Sunday, March 17, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Hot dogs and sno-cones will be served. The cost is $10/child and includes unlimited games plus two food tickets; additional food tickets are available for $1. Call 973-746-4889 or visit bnaikeshet.org.


B’nai Shalom, West Orange — A Purim Carnival-Young Family Gathering and Gift it 4ward Event will be held Sunday, March 17, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Bring canned food as a gift to the poor, a holiday mitzvah. Admission is
$5 per child.

A Purim Night Megillah Reading and Celebration will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. Hamantaschen will be served.

A Purim seudah (meal) and Vashti’s Variety Show will be held Thursday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m. The meal costs $10 (maximum $40 family). Register at bnaishalom.net/events.php#.

Chabad of Randolph — A Purim Story Time session for ages 4 and up will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 4:30-5:15 p.m. at the Randolph Library. RSVP to koval.shlomit@gmail.com.

“Purim in Disney” will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m., featuring a Megillah reading followed by a buffet dinner, a Disney-themed masquerade contest, music, and dancing.

Cost is $18 adult, $10 child, $54 family. RSVP at RandolphJewish.com/Disney.


Chabad Center of Northwest NJ, Rockaway — A Megillah reading accompanied by a Purim video will begin at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, followed by a festive Purim celebration.

A Grand Family “Purim in the Sixties” Celebration will take place at the White Meadow Lake Country Club on Thursday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m. The celebration will include a full-course feast, band, and children’s program and follows a 4:45 Megillah reading.

Chabad of SE Morris County, Madison — A Grand Purim Party will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 6 p.m. at the Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus, Whippany.

The celebration will include a multi-media Megillah reading and party with a buffet dinner, music, a magic show, and a parade and prizes for
all children.

Chabad of West Orange — A Megillah reading followed by music with a DJ and refreshments will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 7:35 p.m. (following Mincha/Ma’ariv at 6:45).

A Purim Feast will be held Thursday, March 21, following Mincha at 5:30 p.m. and a Megillah reading. Hip-Hop rap artist Robert Lefkowitz, A.K.A. “Poppa Left,” will perform, and Dr. Joe Rozehzadeh will share his story of escaping Iran when he was 12 years old, followed by dinner and a chasidic farbrengen. A children’s program will also be held. Cost is $25 adult, $15 children three and up.

Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael — A Jew-Moji Purim Carnival will be held Sunday, March 17, at 10:15 a.m. Cost is $5 per child. Participants may dress as their favorite emoji or create their own
“Jew-moji.” Call 973-538-9292.


Temple Ner Tamid, Bloomfield — An Intergenerational Megillah Reading will be held on Wednesday, March 20, at 6 p.m. and will feature crafts and various group activities ranging from art to music to text study.

“SPNL: SPIEL NIGHT LIVE,” a satire of “Saturday Night Live” characters, will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m.

A Purim carnival will be held Sunday, March 24, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., featuring
a silent auction. Bring a contribution for the Community FoodBank of
New Jersey.

Oheb Shalom Congregation, South Orange — A Purim Community Carnival will be held Sunday, March 17, noon-2 p.m. Cost is $20/child.

A Megillah Reading and Purim Celebration will be held Wednesday,
March 20, at 6 p.m.

Union County Torah Center, Westfield — A free Purim story & crafts hour will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 6 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, Clark. RSVP to 908-789-5252 or info@torahcenter.org or register online

A hamantaschen bake will be held on Sunday, March 17, at 11 a.m. at
111 Laurel Place, Westfield. Cost is $5 per child. RSVP at TorahCenter.org, info@TorahCenter.org, or 908-789-5252.

A Megillah reading followed by hamantaschen and l’chaim will be held on Wednesday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m.

A Megillah reading will be held Thursday, March 21, at 8:45 a.m. A family Purim Celebration will be held 4:30-6:30 p.m. and will feature a pizza dinner, masquerade contest, music by the Kosher DJ, and a magic show. A multimedia Megillah reading will be held at 6 p.m. The fee is $5/family.

A Purim dinner will be held at 6:30, followed by stand-up comedy by Edward Mullayev (The Kosher Comic). Cost is $25 adults, $15 children. RSVP by March 18.
