Body and soul

As a Jewish physician in the area, I read with interest the article, “For pre-med students, Jewish role models.” (Middlesex edition, July 16) I applaud Rabbi Lewis’s efforts, but I was taken aback by his comment that “if you want to be a Jewish physician you need to look at not just the way you treat a patient medically, but the way you treat them spiritually…you must take time and treat them with kindness. You must talk to them and treat patients respectfully.” I believe it is incumbent that all physicians strive to behave in this manner and that to differentiate Jewish from non-Jewish physicians in this way is not ethical or appropriate.
