Bertha Schaeffer
Bertha Schaeffer, 96, of West Orange died Feb. 25, 2012.
After her raising her children, Mrs. Schaeffer embarked on a career in fashion, working first at Bamberger’s in Newark. She later worked at stores such as Burdines of Florida and Bonwit Teller and Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City before starting a boutique featuring a then-emerging designer, Ralph Lauren.
She had an active interest in Republican politics and was a staunch supporter of Israel. She also had a love of animals.
Predeceased by her son, David, in 2003, she is survived by her daughter, Esther Penni Cochrane; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 28 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Barnabas Hospice or an animal charity of one’s choice.
