Bernard Hailperin

Bernard Hailperin, 90, of Lauderhill, Fla., died June 22, 2013. He previously lived in Livingston.

Mr. Hailperin was an English and drama teacher in Newark and Parsippany public schools. He also served as a debate coach, winning Coach of the Year honors in 1982.

He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II.

He later became a published author. His fictional work, Children of Vesuvius, was published 60 years after it was written while serving in Naples during the war.

He spent time as an evaluator at the Paper Mill Playhouse. Later in life, he would present his “Travels with Bernie” lecture and slide series to senior homes and assisted living facilities in Florida.

Predeceased by his wife Alice (Zimmerman), and a stepdaughter, Bonnie Heitman, he is survived by his wife, Sheila (Prince); his daughter, Mila Hailperin-Kessler; his son, Roy; a stepson, Scott Schwartz; a sister, Sandra Young; and six grandchildren.

Services were held June 22 with arrangements by Volk Leber Funeral Home, Teaneck.
