At odds with Judaism

In my close family and among the people I respect and hold dear, there is a terrible tension about the coming weeks, because there is so much at stake. For thinking people, there is no option but to vote for Obama. I was stunned to see Sheldon Adelson’s opinion on your pages (“Can friends of Israel take Obama at his word?”, Oct. 18). Ethics are, for many of us, at the heart of Judaism and Adelson (along with other Romney supporters) is at odds with everything I value in Judaism.

To paraphrase the late George McGovern: The highest Zionism is not a blind acceptance of official policy, but a love of Israel deep enough to call her to a higher plain.
