Arthur Feibush

Arthur M. Feibush, 81, a longtime resident of Westfield, died Dec. 22, 2011. He was a descendent of the medieval scribe Joel ben Simeon Feibush Ashkenazi.

Dr. Feibush worked in various industrial research positions, was the inventor on several U.S. patents, and the author of numerous scientific papers and presentations. He then became involved in the sales and marketing of large engineered systems and later in management of environmental remediation programs. He was instrumental in the construction of the first commercial system for the recovery of radioactive gases from nuclear fuel reprocessing.

He earned an AB degree with honors at Syracuse University, and was awarded a pre-doctoral research appointment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he completed the research for his PhD in chemistry.

He was elected to membership in Alpha Chi Sigma, the chemistry honorary society, and the Society of the Sigma Xi, the research honorary society. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Nuclear Society.

He was active in a number of civic organizations in Westfield and was interested in public school activities. He served as an elected member of the Westfield Board of Education and later as a member of the board of directors and president of the Westfield Adult School. Pursuing his interest in gardening, he became a Rutgers Cooperative Certified Master Gardener and devoted much time to that organization.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pauline; his son, Eliot of Pennington; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Dec. 28 at Temple Beth O’r/Beth Torah, Clark, with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, 335 Watterson St., Westfield, NJ 07090-3321.
