Arthur Bard

Arthur Bard, 79, of Westfield died June 25, 2016. A Holocaust survivor, he was born in Poland and spent World War II in a gulag in northwestern Russia and then in Turkesta, Turkmenistan. In 1947, he and his mother joined his brother, a World War II veteran, in Brooklyn, where he lived most of his life before eventually moving to Manhattan and then Westfield in 2006.

After college, Mr. Bard became owner/director of Stenotype Academy, a private business school in lower Manhattan, teaching court machine shorthand. Despite having a disability since 1993, he was working and active until he retired in 2003. 

He is survived by his wife, Joellen; his son, David (Rubina) of Scotch Plains; two sisters, Esther Gorny of Brooklyn and Hilda Pinewski of Lawrence, NY; a brother, Martin of Boston; and two grandchildren.

Services were held June 26 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
