Arlene Berger
Arlene Berger (Lewis), 87, of Monroe Township died June 21, 2017. Born in Brooklyn, she grew up in Queens.
Mrs. Berger worked as a special education teacher in the Hamilton School District for 22 years.
She attended Queens College and, when her children were school age, returned to college and received a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in special education from Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey).
She volunteered at Greenwood House in Ewing, was a life member of Hadassah, and an active member of the sisterhood at Congregation Brothers of Israel. At the age of 77, she became a bat mitzvah at Beit Shalom Synagogue in Monroe Township.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold; her daughter, Sheryl (Joseph) Punia; two sons, James (Michelle) and Lawrence (Fern); seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services were held June 25 with arrangements by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to Greenwood House, Ewing.
