Alvin Melveger

Alvin J. Melveger, 75, of Flanders died Aug. 25, 2012. He was born and raised in Brooklyn.

Dr. Melveger spent most of his career at Ethicon Corp. in Somerville.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College, his master’s from Northeastern University, and his PhD from the University of Maryland.

He was a member of the American Chemical Society, Eastern Analytical Society, and the American Microchemical Society.

He served his community as treasurer of the Library Board of Trustees, a member of the Community Advisory Panel, and as a past member of Mount Olive Township’s Environmental Commission.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Weiner); his daughter, Jill; and a sister, Barbara Schonfeld.

Services were held Aug. 28 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexis Agin Memorial Fund at Temple Shalom, 2100 Westmoreland St., Falls Church, VA 22043; Temple Hatikvah in Flanders; or the American Diabetes Association.
