Aldan Markson

Aldan Oviter Markson, 89, of Maplewood died June 16, 2019. He was born in New York City and raised in Caldwell.

Mr. Markson practiced law in the Borough of Kenilworth, where he represented individual clients and small businesses for over 60 years. He was the recipient of the AV Permanent Rated Award for over 20 years of exceptional practice in the area of real estate and a certified mediator for the Superior Court of NJ. He served the borough for 24 years, first as municipal prosecutor, then as borough attorney and municipal judge. He was admitted to the Bar of New Jersey in 1957 and in his late 70s he was admitted to the Bar in Ohio in 2010. He practiced law until he surrendered his license at age 88.

He received a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1951, and an L.L.B. from Columbia University in 1954, where he was a Harlan Fisk Stone Scholar. In his 60s, he returned to school and received a Master of Law Taxation from New York University in 1987.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.

He was involved in Maplewood as a former board member of the Durand-Hedden House and Garden Association, the organization he assisted in forming; and as a past member of the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee.

He was a past member of the board of the Institute for Judaeo-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University and received the university’s Shalom Award. He was a member of Congregation B’nai Israel.

Predeceased by a daughter, Emily Ross, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia Hynes; two daughters, Carol (Burton) Goldfield and Jennifer Markson (Jeffrey Batzli); three sons, John (Laura) Markson, Stephen Markson, and Paul (Kelly) Markson; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held June 18 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
