Albert Frankel
Albert Frankel, 84, of Montclair died June 25, 2016. He was born in Syracuse, NY.
Dr. Frankel graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Syracuse University prior to receiving his medical degree in 1956 from the State University of New York, College of Medicine. He embarked on his nearly 46-year career in general surgery and gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Hospital as an attending surgeon and associate professor of clinical surgery.
He served active duty in the Armed Forces July 1961-July 1963 and served as a captain in the U.S. Army’s Medical Corps at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, during the threat of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He returned to Mount Sinai and continued his surgical career publishing numerous papers and lecturing often to the American College of Gastroenterology on surgical diagnoses and treatments for colorectal disorders. In 1979, he was named chief of surgery, senior attending surgeon at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, allowing him to mentor participants in its medical residency program affiliated with the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Upon retirement, he enjoyed painting, showing his work in several art shows.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth French Frankel; two daughters, Karen Strauss and Renee Frankel; his son, Paul Frankel (Amy Hanna); two sisters, Rosalie Wallach and Susan Herman; and four grandchildren.
Services were held June 28 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America or Temple Sholom of West Essex, Cedar Grove.
