Abner Herbst

Abner Herbst, 86, of Maplewood died March 28, 2011. Born and raised in Newark, he lived in Maplewood for 55 years.

Mr. Herbst was a credit manager for a number of companies and the former business manager for the New Jersey Jewish News.

He attended Weequahic High School, Newark, and received his bachelor of business science in accounting from Ohio State University.

He was an active member in the Maplewood Civic Association and the Maplewood Citizens Advisory Committee and was on the board of the Maplewood Village Condominium Association for 39 years.

He was a lifetime member of Oheb Shalom Congregation of South Orange and a former member of the synagogue’s Young Marrieds.

Predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Cooper) in 1988, he is survived by his niece, Diane Herbst; three nephews, Robert Herbst, Jon Herbst, and Richard Ontell; and many grand-nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 29 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
